Auguste Gervais

I first saw Auguste Gervais where it bloomed on the Barbier Pergola in the magnificent garden of Anne Belovich. Many rare roses now available in America were first imported by Anne who has shared them generously with nurseries so that they are now available in America. Ramblers are a passion for Anne and, in particular, the Barbier Ramblers. I agree with her that all of the Barbier ramblers are treasures and, in my opinion, this might just be the best of them. It certainly deserves to be much more widely grown. The growth habit is quite controllable so that one should not fear to grow it on a structure. An understated though slightly voluptuous elegance is the hallmark of Auguste Gervais. There is nothing ordinary about this rose from the perfection of its loosely formed petals to the handtinting of pink and yellow that produces an apricot effect without a less interesting uniformity of color. Add strong fragrance and you have rose perfection. Apparently this has some fall bloom in certain warm climate areas, particularly in California. Introduced in 1918.
