What is a Small Business?
A small business is typically defined using standards from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), which vary by industry and are based on either employee count or annual revenue.
- Manufacturing and mining: up to about 500-1,500 employees.
- Wholesale trade: up to about 100-250 employees.
- Retail and service businesses: up to about $7.5M-$41.5M in annual revenue.
Ownership also matters. If a business is owned by or affiliated with a larger company, its size may be combined with that parent company. Because of this, a brand may appear small in how it operates but not qualify as a small business officially if it is part of a larger organization.
