Overview

Bred by David Austin and introduced in 1990 (registered as AUSvelvet), this English Shrub Rose is renowned for its dramatic, deep crimson-purple blooms that mature into a rich royal purple. The flowers are medium-sized, cupped rosettes with a dense petal count and emit an exceptionally strong, classic "old rose" fragrance. The plant has a relatively low, upright, and somewhat stiff habit, typically reaching only 2.5 to 3 feet in height, which makes it an ideal candidate for the front of a border or for container growing. While it is celebrated for its rare and intense coloration, it is often noted in garden journals for having questionable vigor and a susceptibility to blackspot, requiring attentive care to perform its best.
