La France

Introduced by Guillot in 1867, this variety is historically pivotal as the very first Hybrid Tea rose, marking the transition from Old Garden Roses to the Modern Rose era. The blooms are large, full, and high-centered, with reflexed petals in a silvery-pink that deepens to a richer pink on the reverse. They are famous for their intense, sweet Damask fragrance. A distinctive trait of the variety is the "weak neck"—the slender stems often cannot support the heavy blooms, causing them to nod gracefully. The plant has a somewhat upright but spindly habit, typically reaching three to four feet, with sparse foliage that can be susceptible to blackspot. Despite its growth quirks, it remains a sentimental favorite for its historical status and powerful scent.
