Lovely lavender-pink buds, sometimes with darker edges, open cupped then flatten somewhat and are densely swirled around a green eye. This is a mammoth shrub which in just a few years can attain a size of ten by twelve feet wide or more. Ours grows where it is supported in our fierce windstorms by a sturdy fence. It is covered every year with hundreds of blossoms. As often is the case with antiques, the bush starts with more blooms than it can open. Some fall off early while others turn brown at a later stage of attempting to open. This should not deter anyone considering this rose, however, because the overall effect is magical in a normal year. Introduced in 1853.
