Bred in France by Delbard-Chabert in 1966, 'Altissimo' takes its Italian name from its habit of growing "very high." It is a striking climber, reaching up to fifteen feet, and is easily recognized by its large, single flowers that open to nearly five inches across. These blood-red blooms consist of only seven or eight velvety petals, framing a brilliant center of golden-yellow stamens. Because the flowers are flat and open, they are a particular favorite for pollinators. This variety is exceptionally vigorous and healthy, featuring stiff canes and leathery, dark green foliage that resists disease well.
