Like all the eglantines, in rain, or when stroked between the fingers the leaves of Greenmantle give off the scent of green apples. This is a very robust shrub. Ours is about 12 feet tall and has withstood 60 mph winds on our hilltop with no staking. It has recently thrown up long canes to show its intention of continuing on into the tall fir behind it. Although this probably confers monster status on it, the habit is arching, graceful and airy. A lovely plant with a lovely name. Introduced in1895.
