Overview
Introduced by David Austin in 1983, this variety is historically significant as one of the first releases to successfully establish the commercial identity of the English Rose group. The blooms are loose, informal rosettes of a clear, bright rose-pink that open wide to reveal a muddled center. They are produced in sprays and possess a distinctive fragrance often described as Old Rose with underlying notes of honey and almond. The shrub is vigorous and bushy, typically reaching four to five feet in height with a somewhat angular habit. The foliage is matte, medium green, and while it produces an exceptional early flush and repeats reliably until frost, it can be susceptible to blackspot later in the season. It is also the "parent" of the popular white sport, Winchester Cathedral.
